Since their vacation and admission of feelings, Summer found herself more receptive of things that she'd previously say no to. Such things included going outside just for the hell of it. Because she decided if it was with Gunner Graves, it was worth it.[break][break]

Hence their outing to the Petalburg Woods. Spring was on its way, so flowers were beginning to bloom. Baby Pokemon were starting to show their faces as well.[break][break]

It was much like the start of their relationship, exclusive to each other.[break][break]

Summer's hand held onto Gunner's, the skirts of her dress flowing in the gentle breeze as they walked along the path. Behind them, her trusted ZOROARK stood guard, slinking between the shadows and occasionally taking the shape of other Pokemon for her own entertainment.[break][break]

"I think Hela's grown to like you. She was wary at first, but she's changing between Pokemon to try to make you laugh," Summer pointed out to him.

Gunner was elated by the fact Summer had agreed on another date outdoors. She seemed to slowly warm up to the idea of doing things together that he enjoyed, mixed in with a healthy amount of things she enjoyed. Perhaps one day they really would go glamping.[break][break]

While Summer's Zoroark prowled alongside them changing her illusory forms, Gunner's own Zoroark, Mordred, loped ahead, keeping an eye out for potential dangers.[break][break]

But what dangers could there be in Petalburg Woods? Especially on a well-trod hiking trail that he'd walked many times before?[break][break]

Relaxed and confident, Gunner regarded Hela with an amused expression. "She's a good and loyal friend to you, isn't she? I'm glad you have her."[break][break]

He extended a hand toward the Hisuian Zoroark, passing it through her current illusion to scratch her behind the ears.

Hela allowed Gunner to scratch between her ears, letting out a little grunting noise before breaking forward to catch up with his own ZOROARK. She returned to her normal form, white and red with ghostly tendrils of fur floating behind her as she walked beside him.[break][break]

"Yes. I trust all the Pokemon I have, but she and a few other have a special place in my heart," Summer admitted.[break][break]

She smiled, looking up at Gunner. "And he seems like a firm protector."[break][break]

There was a sign, pointing to the nearby routes ahead. Of course, Summer let Gunner lead the way. However, after a little bit more walking, the sign appeared again. She furrowed her brows, stopping. Hela paused too, her nose pointed in the air sniffing.[break][break]

"Didn't we pass this sign a few minutes ago?"

Morded turned his head toward Hela as she joined his side. He sniffed at her in greeting, uttering a low bark.[break][break]

Gunner's smile turned into a grin of pride. "He is. Morded is the second Pokémon I ever got — wild-caught, unlike my first one, who was a gift from my parents. It took me a while to befriend and train Mordred, but now he's very loyal."[break][break]

They walked for some time, chatting about this and that as their Pokémon played together. Gunner was so familiar with the hiking trails that he didn't even notice they'd passed the same sign twice until Summer pointed it out.[break][break]

He stopped too, frowning. "That's weird. I could have sworn I knew the way."[break][break]

Suddenly, Mordred snarled at something between the trees. His hackles raised and his tail stood up straight. Gunner's eyes narrowed as a high-pitched giggle pierced the tranquil air. Mordred leaped into the bushes where the sound seemed to originate, but stood up moments later and shook his head.[break][break]

"Nothing, huh?" Gunner tugged on Summer's hand. "Let's keep going. Maybe we accidentally took a wrong turn that circled us back here."

Hela let out an almost purring noise, giving Morded a bump before taking off ahead of him. Summer couldn't help but laugh at the two of them.[break][break]

"The same was with Hela. Though one day, I was in one of those distortions with her, that randomly pop up. And she just... transformed. It was amazing. I never saw something like it before. But I think it fits her," she said, watching the flaring of Hela's tail flick in the bushes.[break][break]

Summer paused as Morded growled and pounced, though it seemed as if nothing was there. Her grip on Gunner's hand tightened, not necessarily in a fearful sense, as she looked around. There didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary...[break][break]

"Soething doesn't feel right."[break][break]

She pulled out her phone, but the screen was blank. Nothing showed up, except a singular message:[break][break]

Gunner took out his phone at the same time as Summer, intending to open the GPS app and find their way back safely. But like hers, his phone's screen was completely blank. After pressing the power button a few times, a different message appeared.[break][break]

The same eerie giggle cut through the tense silence, but instead of coming from one direction, it echoed around them. Gunner tightened his grasp on Summer's hand. The trees seemed to twist and warp, and trails he'd sworn had existed before were now blocked.[break][break]

Shadows darted from bush to bush, trunk to trunk. Mordred barked at one close to him, nostrils flared, chasing the scent.[break][break]

And then he pounced, using BOUNCE to jump higher than normal into the air. Seconds later, he came crashing down on something that gave a squeak of alarm. Rolling from the underbrush was an Impidimp, looking battered from the attack.

Summer shivered as she heard the giggles, looking around for the source. But she couldn't see anything. Gunner's grip on her hand was tight, tight enough to hurt. But it was probably the only thing keeping her stable for the moment, not trying to go off on a murderous rampage to clear her mind of this disturbing sound.[break][break]

Then Hela shot from the bushes, lunging out as if she were trying to chase something. Morded BOUNCED, so she stayed out of the way as he came down on it.[break][break]

"An IMPIDIMP?"[break][break]

Hela growled, standing hunched beside Morded as she bared her teeth at it. Her aura was growing dark, as though she were about to attack.[break][break]

"Stand down. If this creature is causing this, we need it to escape."

Gunner raised an eyebrow at Summer. "Do you think we'll be stuck like this if we don't? What's your plan?" he asked. "If it's causing this confusion, can't we just knock it out to dispel the strange… whatever is happening?"[break][break]

Despite the two Zoroarks growling at it, though, the Impidimp did not look frightened. In fact, it snickered mischievously, the sound echoed all around them.[break][break]

Wait, not echoed, Gunner realized. Mimicked. He whirled around, still holding onto Summer. "There's more than one."[break][break]

As if on cue, the bushes rattled once more, and three more Impidimps peeked from the shadows of the underbrush, grinning.

"We aren't absolutely certain it's just it causing this, right? Sure, it's a strong creature... but can it be so strong to create something like this on its own?" Summer wondered out loud.[break][break]

Hela stepped back, though she kept her teeth bared. Ready to attack if her master said the word.[break][break]

Summer stepped forward, letting go of Gunner's hand as she looked at the IMPIDIMP. The way it was reacting caused her concern to think that perhaps it wasn't the only one.[break][break]

And her theory was right as more showed themselves from the shadow.[break][break]

"Hela. Attack." With her master's command, the ZOROARK swiftly moved forth with incredible AGILITY, moving swiftly to swipe down a couple of the creatures before they could disappear. Another of Summer's Pokemon joined the fray, her trusted EMBOAR.[break][break]

"Find the cause of this. I think they have a leader somewhere." Blue flames billowed from his nose as he snorted, stomping through the brush.[break][break]

"Gunner. What do you think?"

Gunner nodded. "You're right. Several Impidimps probably have a Morgrem or even a Grimmsnarl leading them. And if that's the case…" Like Summer, he released a second Pokémon: his Arcanine, Gwyn ap Nudd.[break][break]

"Help find the Impidimps," Gunner instructed both Gwyn and Mordred. Uttering determined barks, they joined Summer's Emboar, their noses to the ground or the air. Gunner followed close behind, keeping Summer in the corner of his eye to make sure he didn't lose her, either.[break][break]

Soon, the group stumbled on a clearing in the forest. At the opposite end was a small, natural shelter made from a fallen tree and a thick, thorny bramble. In the center of the clearing was a perfect ring of mushrooms, each cap red and spotted white.[break][break]

Gunner stared, gaping. "Is that a fairy circle?" He'd never seen one before, not in all the years he'd hiked across mountains and through woodlands.

Of course, she followed behind, her boyfriend close by to make sure that she was okay. She could handle herself, but the sentiment was sweet.[break][break]

The circle they approached was something of fantasy. Summer paused, looking at it with curiosity as the mushrooms danced in a circle. Just as their messages said on their phones.[break][break]

”Round and round,” she repeated.

As soon as Summer uttered those words, the mushrooms expanded to several times their size. The clearing shifted with languid, wavy movements, as if Gunner was drunk or in a dream. He blinked several times to make sure he wasn't hallucinating. But by the way Mordred and Gwyn ap Nudd backed up, he assumed they were seeing the same thing.[break][break]

The forest changed, darkening, as if something had just blotted out the sun. A Grimmsnarl suddenly stepped out from nowhere, heralded by the giggling of Impidimps. Looking closer, Gunner could see them peeking out from behind trees and between bushes.[break][break]

"Gwyn!" he exclaimed suddenly, realizing they were surrounded. "The Grimmsnarl!"[break][break]

The Arcanine sprang into action, leaping at the Bulk Up Pokémon to PLAY ROUGH. Gwyn ap Nudd howled as the Grimmsnarl countered with SUCKER PUNCH.[break][break]

The leaves on their branches shuddered, and a second Grimmsnarl emerge from behind a massive trunk.

Summer saw the GRIMMSNARL, followed by a second. Everything was like a trip, one she used to take with knox prescott. But the second was her immediate concern as Gunner's ARCANINE attacked.[break][break]

"Surtur! Take the second!"[break][break]

A blue-flamed FLAMETHROWER was shot in the others direction, hearing the creature screech in pain. Followed behind him was Hela, using BITTER MALICE to attack behind Surtur's strong offense.[break][break]

"Get us out!"

While Summer's two Pokémon attacked one Grimmsnarl and Gwyn ap Nudd kept the other occupied, Mordred chased after the Impidimps. Using SLUDGE BOMB, the Zoroark blasted the screeching little imps with poison and dodged their clumsy attempts to slow him down.[break][break]

Jaws snapped as Gwyn ap Nudd sank his teeth into the Grimmsnarl opposing him, using FIRE FANG to blast the skin with flames. The other Pokémon let out a horrible, agonized scream, wrenching itself free. Blood splattered on the grass between them.[break][break]

Snarling and breathing heavily, the injured Grimmsnarl struck back with FOUL PLAY. Gwyn ap Nudd staggered backward thanks to the force of the blow.[break][break]

Then Mordred was on the Grimmsnarl's back, digging his claws into muscle for a better hold as he belched a wave of poison onto its head. The sound that spilled from the Grimmsnarl's mouth was unlike anything Gunner had ever heard.[break][break]

And then it collapsed onto the ground, unconscious. Mordred hopped off its body to resume chasing off the Impidimps with Gwyn ap Nudd's help.
